28 Years Later Gets Bigger in IMAX, Not Always Better
The phone-based image rewards scale when the landscape holds still and resists it when the camera runs. Dolby Cinema is the safer premium choice; IMAX depends on the projector and your seat.

This is cinema coverage, and it contains no discussion of late plot turns. The practical issue is not whether Danny Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle made phone photography look sufficiently cinematic. It is whether a premium auditorium helps an image designed around light cameras, abrupt movement and exposed landscapes, or charges extra to make the roughest parts harder to parse.
The causeway run is the useful test. A small figure moves through an open strip of land and water, the horizon gives the frame a firm geographic axis, and the camera’s agitation keeps challenging that clarity. Whenever the shot widens, scale supplies information: distance becomes threatening, empty ground takes time to cross, and the person has less visual weight against the landscape. Whenever the camera closes in and accelerates, the same large screen makes each lateral jolt occupy more of the viewer’s field of vision.
That tension runs through the format decision. The biggest screen is not automatically the fullest version of the film.
What the iPhone image keeps
The film’s phone-led production does not mean an unmodified handset was held upright and pointed at the actors. Phones can be mounted in cages, paired with external lenses and placed on rigs that would be difficult to use with a conventional cinema camera. The useful gain is mobility: Boyle can put cameras close to bodies, low to the ground or into multi-camera arrangements, then cut among angles without making the action feel mechanically covered.
The tradeoff survives professional post-production. A phone sensor is physically small, which affects how it records fine texture, low light and rapid movement even after the footage has been graded for theatrical projection. Rolling shutter, the distortion produced because a sensor reads an image line by line rather than all at once, can make vertical edges lean or wobble during a fast pan. Stabilization can reduce a shake while introducing its own stretching near the frame’s edges.
IMAX cannot recover detail that the camera never captured. It can make existing detail easier to see, particularly in broad daylight, but the same enlargement exposes hard sharpening, smeared foliage and the strained boundaries of a digitally stabilized shot. This matters during the causeway run because the horizon is both a compositional guide and an unforgiving ruler. If it trembles while the foreground surges, the movement reads more aggressively on a wall-sized screen.
That is part of the design. It is not always pleasant.
IMAX helps the geography before it helps the chase
IMAX, meaning a premium system built around a very large screen with proprietary projection and sound standards, gives the open locations their clearest argument for an upgrade. The causeway looks less like background and more like a distance that must be managed. A figure crossing it remains visible while the surrounding water and sky retain their scale, so the viewer can understand exposure and isolation without waiting for a close-up to explain them.
The benefit depends heavily on the venue. A laser IMAX uses laser light sources rather than a traditional xenon lamp, usually producing stronger brightness and more consistent contrast. That matters here because gray skies, dark clothing and textured ground can collapse toward the same middle tones on a tired projector. A well-maintained laser room keeps those layers apart.
Screen shape matters too. IMAX branding does not guarantee that every film fills the tall screen, and a wide composition may retain unused space above and below unless an expanded aspect ratio has been prepared for that presentation. The larger canvas still enlarges the picture, but it does not necessarily reveal additional photographed area. Paying for IMAX should therefore mean paying for projection quality, screen size and sound, not assuming a different cut of the image.
Sit farther back than usual. From the front third of a steep IMAX auditorium, the causeway run’s handheld motion can demand head movement as well as eye movement, which adds physical effort without clarifying the chase. A rear-center seat lets the horizon remain within a stable field of view while preserving the scale that justified the ticket.
There is little reason to seek out 70mm solely because the movie is being discussed alongside large-format presentation. A 70mm print is a wide film presentation format valued for image area and photochemical texture, but phone-based digital acquisition does not become native large-format photography when transferred to film. If a venue advertises a special print, that may be interesting as an exhibition event. It is not the default route to more source detail.
Dolby Cinema makes a better compromise
Dolby Cinema pairs high-contrast laser projection with Dolby Atmos, an audio system that places sounds around and above the auditorium. For this film, the projection side of that package is more decisive than the overhead channels. Phone photography can hold a striking image when bright exterior detail and deep shadow remain separated; it looks cheaper when blacks lift toward gray or a dim lamp erases texture from the lower half of the frame.
High dynamic range, meaning a wider visible span between dark and bright parts of the picture, gives the grade room to maintain that separation. It does not conceal every acquisition artifact, but it prevents the entire image from being enlarged as aggressively as it would be in the biggest IMAX rooms. During the causeway run, the water, cloud cover and ground remain distinct while the lateral shaking occupies a smaller portion of vision.
The sound also gains precision without needing to become an endurance test. The film moves between pressured action and quieter stretches, so a system that can place a distant disturbance before raising the overall level suits the pacing better than a room tuned mainly for blunt impact. Dolby auditoriums still vary, but the package is more standardized than the broad range of theaters carrying an IMAX sign.
Dolby is the safer premium ticket. It preserves the contrast and sound advantages while placing a limit on how much visual instability fills the room.
A standard auditorium may smooth the roughness
A standard screen does not reveal as much in the open landscapes, yet its smaller apparent image can make the close pursuit material easier to follow. This is not because the movement changes. Less of the viewer’s field of vision is occupied by each shake, so the brain has a steadier border around the frame.
The risk is projection. A bright standard laser auditorium can present the film with enough separation to keep figures readable against the land, and in that case the lower ticket price carries a modest compromise rather than a major loss. An older or dimly maintained room may flatten the causeway into bands of similar gray, bury shadow detail and weaken the visual alternation between exposed daylight and enclosed darkness.
Choose a standard auditorium if rapid handheld footage tends to cause nausea, or if the local premium screen is known more for size than brightness. Sit near the center, slightly behind the midpoint. The film does not need front-row immersion; its aggressive movement already supplies it.
Scale does not solve the pacing
The running time is not the main burden. The film works in pulses, moving from tense travel and abrupt attack into quieter passages where the landscape, bodies and small pieces of routine carry more weight than constant forward motion. A premium screen sharpens that alternation, but it cannot make every transition feel equally controlled.
IMAX favors the pauses more than expected. Once the camera settles and a person becomes a small part of a wide composition, the larger image lets the viewer inspect distance instead of waiting for the next cut. When movement resumes, however, size can reduce comprehension at the instant the edit wants to increase urgency. The causeway run contains both effects within one visual idea: the wide view explains the danger, while the close agitation withholds clean orientation.
Dolby keeps that shift legible enough without smoothing away its abrasion. A standard room softens both sides, reducing the grandeur of the quiet images along with the force of the attacks. None changes the underlying rhythm. The format decision concerns how much intensity to add, not how quickly the film gets through its story.
For most viewers paying a premium, the order is Dolby Cinema, laser IMAX from a rear-center seat, then a good standard laser auditorium. Move IMAX to first place if the local screen is exceptionally large, uses laser projection and the landscapes matter more to you than clean motion. Move standard to first if handheld pursuit footage is a physical problem.
Do not pay extra for size alone.
