An IMAX Camera Does Not Promise The Odyssey on Film

The Odyssey was captured on IMAX film, but many IMAX screenings will still use digital projection. The exact words beside the showtime determine what reaches the screen.

This is cinema coverage, and the useful object is not the camera Nolan took to sea or the size of the screen in a promotional photograph. It is the small format label beside a showtime, where “IMAX,” “IMAX with Laser,” “70mm” and “IMAX 70mm” describe different presentations even when every auditorium is selling the same film.

That distinction will matter ahead of The Odyssey’s planned July 2026 theatrical release. Universal and IMAX have promoted Christopher Nolan’s production as the first feature captured entirely with IMAX film cameras, an achievement made possible in part by newer equipment designed to be quieter and easier to handle. The claim concerns how the images were recorded. It does not mean every theater playing The Odyssey will receive a film print, nor does it turn the general IMAX label into shorthand for one projection system.

The checkout page is the concrete case to keep in view. If one showtime says “IMAX 70mm” and another only says “IMAX,” those are not two labels for the same technical package. The first identifies a film presentation. The second usually does not.

Capture and projection do separate jobs

A capture format, meaning the medium and image area used by the camera during photography, determines how the production records detail, grain, movement and framing. The Odyssey was photographed with IMAX film cameras, which pull large-format negative through the camera horizontally and expose an image much larger than the frame used by conventional 35mm photography.

That large negative gives Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema substantial image area to work with, particularly when a composition is intended to fill a tall IMAX screen. Film grain remains part of the recorded image rather than an effect added by a projector. The camera claim is real and consequential.

Projection begins later. A projection format, meaning the system that delivers the finished movie to the auditorium screen, might use a physical print or a digital cinema file sent through a laser or older xenon projector. A movie photographed on film can be scanned, finished and distributed digitally; a film print can also contain material that passed through digital stages for visual effects or other post-production work. “Shot on film” therefore describes the origin of the photography, not an unbroken strip of celluloid running from the set to the theater.

This is where the ordinary IMAX showtime label loses precision. It identifies the branded auditorium and presentation system, but it does not, by itself, state that a 70mm print has arrived in the projection booth. Most IMAX locations project digitally. The Odyssey can retain the scale, texture and composition of its film capture in a digital master, yet the light reaching the screen will come from a digital projector rather than passing through a film print.

The difference is not fraud or a technical failure. It is distribution. IMAX 70mm projectors and trained film projection teams exist in a relatively small group of theaters, while digital systems allow the movie to reach far more premium screens without manufacturing, shipping and handling a large-format print for every site.

What “IMAX 70mm” promises

IMAX 70mm uses 15-perforation film, often shortened to 15/70, in which each frame runs horizontally across 15 perforations of the print. The system can project the tall 1.43:1 image associated with full-height IMAX auditoriums, provided the movie’s master and the theater’s screen support that presentation.

When a theater lists The Odyssey as “IMAX 70mm,” the wording makes a specific promise: a physical IMAX-format print will run through a compatible projector. That is the clearest choice for a viewer who wants the capture and exhibition formats brought as close together as the release allows, with the mechanical character of film projection and access to the tallest intended frame.

It still does not mean that the print is the original camera negative, or that every stage between photography and projection avoided digital tools. The finished print is an exhibition object assembled after editing, effects and mastering. The meaningful distinction at the ticket counter is narrower: film passes through the projector during that screening.

A listing that says only “70mm” means something else. Conventional 70mm presentation generally uses five perforations per frame and moves the film vertically, producing a wide image rather than the 15/70 IMAX frame. If The Odyssey receives standard 70mm engagements, those screenings may appeal to viewers who value film projection, but “70mm” without “IMAX” should not be mistaken for IMAX 70mm.

Return to the checkout page. The word “70mm” must appear next to “IMAX” if that is what you intend to buy. A large IMAX logo elsewhere on the theater site is not enough.

Digital IMAX is not one fixed experience

Digital IMAX has its own divisions. IMAX with Laser means a laser-light projection system, but the listing may not tell you whether the venue has a single-projector system built around the more common 1.90:1 image or a dual-projector system capable of filling a 1.43:1 screen.

Auditorium architecture matters as much as the hardware: a tall master cannot create extra wall above and below a screen that was built to a wider shape.

A full-height venue using IMAX’s dual-laser system can be a strong alternative when IMAX 70mm is unavailable. It can present deep contrast, stable brightness and the tall 1.43:1 frame when the theater and the supplied version permit it, avoiding the weave, dust or projection variability that can accompany a physical print. For a long epic built around large environments and bodies moving through them, preserving the vertical composition may matter more than insisting that the projector contain film.

Single-laser IMAX usually presents a 1.90:1 image, which is taller than the widescreen shape used for many standard releases but does not expose as much height as 1.43:1. Older digital IMAX venues may use xenon projection, with lower resolution and less contrast than current laser installations.

All can carry the IMAX name. They do not produce interchangeable pictures.

The film has not been released, so no responsible format guide can yet identify how every sequence will be framed, how often the full image height will be used or what the final digital and film masters will contain. The camera format creates the capacity for those choices. Theater listings and confirmed venue specifications reveal how much of that capacity a particular screening can show.

How to read the listing before paying

Start with the exact showtime rather than the theater’s general formats page. “IMAX 70mm” is the unambiguous film option. “IMAX with Laser” confirms digital laser projection but may require one more check with the venue to establish whether it is single laser or dual laser, and whether the auditorium has a 1.43:1 screen.

Plain “IMAX” needs the most verification because it can cover several generations of digital equipment.

Screen size alone cannot settle the decision. A very wide digital IMAX screen may produce a forceful image while cropping the presentation to 1.90:1, whereas a less expansive-looking full-height auditorium may reveal more image above and below. Marketing pages also reuse photographs and format descriptions across locations, so the theater’s own technical page, a direct call to the box office or IMAX’s venue information is more useful than a search-result thumbnail.

Once the equipment is known, the choice becomes practical. Buy IMAX 70mm first if film projection is the event you want and the travel, seat position and premium are reasonable. Choose dual-laser IMAX at a 1.43:1 venue when preserving the tall frame matters more than seeing a print, or when the available film seats would put you against the screen.

A well-positioned seat in single-laser IMAX can be preferable to a poor seat in the nominally rare format.

Standard 70mm and digital IMAX create a less automatic comparison. The 70mm show offers physical film but may use a wider frame and a conventional auditorium; digital IMAX may provide the taller composition, a larger screen and an IMAX sound mix. The right order depends on whether the viewer values the projected medium or the geometry of the image. The label tells you the tradeoff.

It does not choose for you.

For the ordinary ticket buyer, the premium is not justified by the phrase “filmed for IMAX” alone. Pay after the venue identifies what it will project. At that checkout page, four extra characters can carry the deciding information: “70mm.”
