The Odyssey Trailer Changes Shape. Don’t Buy IMAX Yet.
Taller trailer shots show that The Odyssey was composed with expanded frames in mind. They do not reveal which theater will project them, or how much of the finished film will use them.

This is cinema coverage about theatrical formats, not an assessment of the finished film. It discusses only material used in the officially released marketing and contains no story spoilers beyond those images.
The frame to keep returning to is a wide sea composition in which a vessel sits low against the horizon, leaving water and sky to carry much of the image. In a wider presentation, the same basic composition feels compressed into a horizontal strip. When the trailer opens vertically, more space appears above and below the central action, and the vessel remains small rather than becoming the whole point of the shot.
That difference is visible. Its cause is not.
What the changing frame can establish
Aspect ratio, meaning the relationship between an image’s width and height, is the first useful thing to inspect. A conventional widescreen trailer may place a roughly 2.39:1 image inside the 16:9 rectangle used by televisions and video players, producing black bars above and below. An IMAX presentation can use a taller 1.
90:1 image, while some purpose-built auditoriums can show the taller 1.43:1 shape.
The Odyssey marketing moves between wider and taller compositions. That tells us the trailer master contains more than one presented frame shape, rather than forcing every selected shot into one fixed strip. The switch also appears motivated by composition: wider dialogue or landscape arrangements can remain broad, while large-scale images gain room above and below the subject.
Return to the vessel and horizon. The taller framing does not merely enlarge the same crop until it fills more of a phone screen. It changes the balance between the object and its surroundings, which is the reason expanded-image presentations can matter for a film built around bodies, ships and large exterior spaces. Extra height gives a standing figure room from head to foot and lets a horizon remain visible without cutting away the foreground.
That is meaningful evidence of intent. Christopher Nolan and the marketing team are showing audiences that frame expansion belongs to the presentation language of The Odyssey, and the transitions train viewers to notice when the image becomes taller. The trailer therefore supports a limited claim: at least some promoted shots were prepared to benefit from a taller frame.
It cannot establish how often the finished film changes shape. Trailers rearrange material, shorten shots and may favor the most format-friendly images because those images sell premium screenings. A two-minute marketing cut could collect expansions that are widely separated in the feature, or it could understate a film that stays tall for long passages. The trailer’s ratio pattern is its own edit.
Why the web encode stops being evidence
An encode is the compressed video file prepared for a particular platform. Once trailer footage has passed through that file, a browser, an app and a display, it can no longer settle questions about theatrical image quality.
Compression may smooth grain, break fine texture into blocks or create bands across skies and dark water. A platform may deliver different bitrates according to connection speed, while a television can add sharpening or motion processing. None of those changes reveals how a theatrical source will look. A clean online image does not prove a sharp projection, and a muddy stream does not prove the cinema image will be muddy.
Black bars are also weak evidence when considered alone. They can be baked into the uploaded file, added by the player or introduced by a user’s display settings. Reposted clips may crop those bars away, and vertical social edits can cut into both sides of the original composition. Screenshots circulating without the full player window are especially poor evidence because they hide the boundaries needed to identify the delivered frame.
The sea-and-horizon shot makes the problem easy to see. Its composition can demonstrate that one official version contains extra vertical picture information, provided the full source frame is preserved. It cannot tell you whether that image came from a 1.43:1 theatrical master, a 1.
90:1 extraction or another intermediate framing prepared for marketing. Those versions can resemble one another after being placed inside a 16:9 web video.
Resolution labels do not solve this. A platform’s 4K option describes the dimensions of the delivered file, not the resolving power of the camera material, the quality of the theatrical master or the brightness and focus of a local projector. High dynamic range, which expands the range between dark and bright parts of an image, is equally dependent on the specific master and display. A trailer playing in HDR at home does not certify an HDR cinema presentation.
IMAX is not one ticket type
The IMAX name covers auditoriums with different screen shapes and projection systems. Some locations use a 1.90:1 screen with digital projection. A smaller group can present 1.
43:1 imagery through compatible laser equipment or 15-perforation 70mm film, commonly shortened to 15/70, in which each large film frame runs horizontally through the projector.
That distinction matters more than an IMAX logo on a trailer. If The Odyssey supplies 1.43:1 material, a 1.90:1 auditorium cannot display the full height of that version.
The presentation may still be larger and louder than a standard screening, but the specific top-and-bottom expansion suggested by the tallest marketing frames would remain unavailable.
The word 70mm needs similar attention. Conventional 70mm and IMAX 15/70 are not interchangeable, even though both use film of the same width. They run the film through the projector in different directions and produce differently shaped frames. A listing that says only 70mm does not confirm the towering IMAX frame associated with 15/70.
This is where waiting becomes useful rather than cautious for its own sake. Before paying, look for the venue’s exact format label and the auditorium being used. A listing that identifies IMAX 70mm or a 1.43-capable laser presentation answers more than a generic premium-format badge.
The theater’s own technical page, a seating chart tied to the named auditorium and prior format listings can help establish which screen the ticket covers.
Do not infer the specification from price. A higher surcharge can reflect location, recliners or a branded sound system without buying more picture area. The relevant question is whether the auditorium can reproduce the frame shape being advertised and whether the finished release will send that venue a compatible version.
A buying rule before tickets go on sale
The trailer gives format-focused viewers a reason to wait for specifications, not a reason to reserve the first premium seat offered. Hold out for two pieces of information: the exact projection format at the chosen theater and confirmation of the frame shapes used in the release version. The second detail may arrive through official exhibition notes, theater listings or reliable technical reporting closer to release.
If a nearby venue confirms 1.43-capable projection and receives a matching version, the taller compositions become a concrete reason to choose it. The vessel against the horizon should retain more of the vertical environment shown in the expanded marketing frame, rather than being cropped to fit a wider screen. For a film using scale as part of its staging, that is a visible benefit rather than a logo-based promise.
If every practical option is 1.90:1 digital IMAX, compare the real auditorium experience instead. Screen size from the selected seat, projection consistency and sound presentation may still justify the surcharge, but the trailer cannot make that decision for you. A well-run standard large auditorium can be the better purchase when the branded room has poor sightlines or an undersized screen.
There is no evidence in an online trailer that can verify projector focus on opening night. It cannot confirm lamp or laser brightness, masking around the screen, sound calibration or whether a specific show will run from film. Those are venue questions. Marketing frames describe an intended image; the theater determines how much of that intention reaches the seat.
The useful conclusion is narrow. The Odyssey trailer shows that changing frame height matters to the way selected images have been presented, with the sea-and-horizon composition gaining space rather than mere size. It does not yet prove which premium ticket will preserve that choice.
