It also gives the feature one structural problem: “transfer” sounds as though every trace of the viewer moves in one clean bundle, but Netflix is copying profile data, not relocating an account. The useful test is one half-watched episode. Before touching the account, note a series sitting in Continue Watching, the episode number and roughly where playback stopped. That marker will tell you more than a familiar profile icon, because it checks whether the destination received the viewing history that supports resuming a show.

This is streaming coverage, and the practical decision is narrow: transfer before canceling if the profile contains years of viewing signals or a My List worth keeping. Starting fresh may be preferable when the recommendations have become a household compromise nobody recognizes.

Make a marker before changing anything

Open the profile that will move and photograph or write down the Continue Watching row, one distinctive title in My List and a couple of recommendation rows. Use the half-watched episode as the main marker. A title near the end of an episode is easier to verify than one stopped during its opening scene, where the displayed progress can be hard to distinguish.

Also inspect the profile’s language, subtitle appearance, autoplay choices and maturity controls. If the viewer has spent years using thumbs-up or other available rating controls, those choices move with the viewing history and give the new destination more context than a blank profile would have. A household member whose profile has mostly been used by other people may discover that the transfer preserves the mess too. Continue Watching deserves its own check because Netflix promises the history behind it, rather than a permanent copy of a particular row. Play the marked episode from the destination, confirm the season and episode, then inspect the progress bar. My List moves, but availability still rules

Netflix includes My List, its profile-level watchlist, in the data that transfers. Saved titles should therefore appear under the transferred profile without being added again. Check the distinctive title noted before the move, preferably something that is not a major Netflix release likely to be easy to spot elsewhere on the home screen.

The list cannot preserve access to a title Netflix no longer carries. It may also look different after a move between countries because catalog rights vary by location, while sorting and display can change as the service updates its interface. In those cases, the saved preference may have moved even though the title is not currently playable at the destination.

This is where Profile Transfer earns its few minutes of setup. Rebuilding a short list is easy. Reconstructing years of saved films, abandoned series and titles waiting for the right mood is work most people will never finish, which leaves a new profile feeling emptier than the subscription it replaced.

Profile settings move; account privileges do not
