Christopher Nolan shot The Odyssey entirely with IMAX film cameras. Here is how to verify IMAX 70mm, judge digital IMAX and avoid paying extra for an unclear listing.

This is cinema coverage, and it contains no plot spoilers. The useful fact arrives before any discussion of image quality: Christopher Nolan and Universal have presented The Odyssey as a feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, rather than a production that reserves the large format for several set pieces. That makes the projection choice part of the ticket choice from the start.

The label to keep returning to is “IMAX 70mm.” It should appear in full on the theater’s showtime page, checkout screen or official format notice. “Experience it in IMAX” does not mean the same thing, and neither does a 70mm listing without IMAX attached.

What the camera choice can change

IMAX film capture uses 65mm negative running horizontally through the camera, with the release print described as 70mm because the projected film carries extra space outside the photographed image. In the classic IMAX configuration, each frame spans 15 perforations, the holes that guide film through the mechanism, giving the image far more negative area than conventional 35mm capture.

That area matters when a frame contains fine surfaces, distant figures or broad movement across depth, since film can retain texture without forcing the viewer’s attention toward one digitally sharpened plane. It also gives the filmmakers room to compose for the tall 1.43:1 IMAX frame, an aspect ratio that is much closer to a square than the wide image associated with most multiplex screens.

The Odyssey’s production choice therefore points toward scale built through framing, not just enlargement. A ship, shoreline or body crossing the frame can occupy more vertical space while the surrounding environment remains legible, and a close-up can become imposing because the image extends above and below the area visible in a wider presentation. Those are examples of what the format permits, not descriptions of unreleased scenes.

There is an important limit. Shooting entirely with IMAX film cameras does not, by itself, confirm that every projected minute will fill every 1.43:1 screen, nor does it establish the final aspect-ratio plan for each release format. The completed presentation specifications and theater listings remain the evidence to use.

Why IMAX 70mm is the reference option

A genuine IMAX 70mm screening runs a physical 15-perforation film print through an IMAX film projector. At a venue with the tall screen built for it, that combination can preserve the large image area and vertical composition closest to the format Nolan chose during production, without reducing the film-originated picture to the dimensions of a digital projector.

This is the premium ticket with the clearest case behind it. The value lies in the chain remaining coherent: large-format film acquisition, a large-format print and a screen capable of showing the tall frame. The Odyssey asks viewers to pay attention to that chain because its IMAX use is not being marketed as an occasional expansion around action peaks.

Film projection still depends on execution. Focus can drift, a print can collect wear, the lamp must be set correctly, and the theater needs staff who know the machinery. A well-run digital presentation can look steadier than a poorly maintained film show. None of that erases the distinction; it means “IMAX 70mm” identifies the format, not a guarantee that every booth will deliver it equally well.

Availability will also be limited by the number of equipped theaters and prints. A long drive, an awkward seat or a showtime that turns the evening into a logistical exercise can outweigh the gain. The format is worth prioritizing when the venue has a documented record of presenting Nolan’s large-format releases, the seat is near the horizontal center, and the surcharge remains smaller than the cost and attention demanded by a special trip.

Digital IMAX splits into different experiences

Digital IMAX means the movie is projected from a digital cinema package rather than a film print, but that label covers rooms with different projectors and screen shapes. The most consequential division is between a venue capable of the tall 1.43:1 image and one limited to the shorter 1.90:1 IMAX frame.

IMAX with dual laser projection, meaning two laser projectors aligned to produce one image, can support 1.43:1 presentation in a compatible auditorium. The screen itself must also have that geometry, and the movie package supplied to the theater must include the tall version. Dual laser written on an equipment page is useful evidence.

It is not enough without the screen and presentation details.

Other digital IMAX rooms commonly use a 1.90:1 screen, which is still taller than a wide standard presentation and may retain more image above and below. The picture can be bright, stable and clean, with no print wear or mechanical weave. It will not reproduce the full height of a 1.

That makes digital IMAX the sensible fallback rather than a consolation purchase. Choose it when the venue confirms dual laser and a 1.43:1 screen, or when a well-kept 1.90:1 IMAX auditorium offers the best combination of image size, central seating and sound nearby.

Decline the surcharge when the theater supplies only the word “IMAX,” cannot identify the projector and has a screen that is barely larger than its standard rooms.

Sound does not follow the film label automatically

IMAX sound is reproduced from a separate digital system even during a 70mm film presentation. The film print and audio chain should therefore be evaluated as related parts of the show, not as one technology. Some upgraded laser venues support a more extensive speaker layout, while the exact system in an older film-equipped auditorium may differ.

The audible advantage should be control. Dialogue needs to remain intelligible as music and effects rise, low frequencies should carry weight without turning sustained passages into vibration, and movement across the front of the room should remain attached to the image. A louder room is not necessarily a better room.

Theater staff may not know every specification, but they can usually confirm whether the auditorium uses laser projection, whether it has received a sound upgrade and whether the listed screening is film or digital. For The Odyssey, those answers are more useful than a generic premium-format logo.

Standard projection can still be the right ticket

Standard projection will show the same movie, but it may use a wider crop or alternate composition, a smaller screen and a conventional sound system. The exact ratio and release formats should be checked once Universal publishes final exhibition details. Until then, claims about precisely how much image standard audiences will lose are premature.

A strong standard laser auditorium can beat a weak premium room on brightness, focus, seating and basic comfort. This matters over a feature that asks for sustained attention, particularly if the available IMAX seats force the viewer against a side wall or into the first rows, where the tall frame becomes work rather than immersion. The alternative is not failure. It is a more compact presentation of material designed with a larger canvas in mind.

Do not pay a surcharge merely because “large format” appears in marketing copy. Pay when the format listing identifies a projection system, the auditorium gives that system the screen shape it needs, and the available seat lets the composition settle in front of you.

Verify the screening before checkout

Start with the exact showtime, not the theater’s general technology page. Look for “IMAX 70mm” beside the individual performance. If the page says only “70mm,” treat it as a different presentation unless the cinema confirms that it is the 15-perforation IMAX format.

Next, check the auditorium’s screen ratio. A venue that advertises a 1.43:1 screen has the tall geometry associated with classic IMAX, while a 1.90:1 room cannot display that full frame.

Screen ratio alone does not identify the projector, so continue to the equipment listing and look for IMAX film projection or dual laser.

Then contact the theater using plain terms: confirm that the chosen showtime uses a physical IMAX 70mm print, or ask whether the digital show can display 1.43:1. Avoid asking whether it is “real IMAX,” a phrase with no precise operational meaning and one that often produces a marketing answer.

Finally, inspect the seat map. The center of the room, slightly behind its midpoint, is a safer starting point than the first few rows, though auditorium geometry varies. If those seats are gone, a centered standard screening can be a better purchase than an extreme-angle IMAX ticket.

Keep a screenshot of the listing when booking a special-format show. Equipment problems can force a theater to substitute digital projection, and the saved “IMAX 70mm” label gives the customer a clear basis for asking staff what changed. The booking label is the anchor because it connects the production choice to the projection the ticket promises.

Put verified IMAX 70mm first when it is reasonably accessible. Put 1.43:1 dual-laser IMAX next, followed by a good 1.90:1 digital IMAX room.
